Sophie Keith
Sophie Keith is an artist whose work explores the intersection of myth, legend, folklore and popular culture. Keith is interested in how collective memory shapes our understanding of the world. They are fascinated by props, sets and memorabilia, and by the moment they transition from ordinary objects into symbolic, emotionally charged artefacts. Keith’s work draws on horror, science fiction and fantasy, exploring how these genres function as allegories for wider social and cultural anxieties.
Combining sound, performance, painting, writing and repurposed textiles, their work exaggerates the conventions of horror until they become absurd. Rather than simply reproducing horror, their pieces explore how the things that once terrified us can become familiar, affectionate and even ridiculous over time, transforming inherited fears into something playful while questioning how folklore continues to shape collective memory. Keith is interested in the elements that make up a film or play, and in how their meaning shifts when they are isolated from their original narrative. Their work attempts to deconstruct these components, exploring pop culture and myth through a non-linear installation that separates props, characters and iconography from a linear storyline.
