Finlay James (b. 2002) is a London-based painter. He grew up on the Dorset-Somerset border, moving to the capital as a teenager and graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2025. His paintings begin as abstract forms inspired by Renaissance layering techniques, which he then enjoys vandalising with overt figuration. Realistic forms may be obscured by further glazes, figures or abstract marks, each layer disrupting what came before. Through this accumulation and interference, dissonant scenes emerge.
