Kairos Huang

Kairos Huang is a young artist working between China and the United Kingdom. Painting remains central to her practice, alongside ongoing experiments with mixed media and interdisciplinary projects.

Classical imagery recurs throughout her work, though rarely in its complete form. Sculptures, figures and seemingly familiar historical images enter the paintings, only to recede through successive layers of paint. Kairos works through repeated glazing, at times removing passages she has already completed before painting them again. Her images remain suspended in a state of partial emergence: familiar, yet never immediately legible.
Her practice has long been concerned with the act of looking. The same image can take on different meanings in the eyes of different viewers, just as time can alter the way a person returns to something once seen. Figures therefore often appear only in fragments. A face, the contour of a body, or a trace resembling a remnant of memory surfaces through colour before receding once again.

In recent years, Kairos has increasingly moved away from a fixed visual centre. Figures withdraw into colour and brushwork, while the boundaries of the image become more fluid. She is interested in how an image takes shape through looking, and how that encounter continues to alter it. The process does not end when the painting is finished.
