Sun Xiaolan
Sun Xiaolan’s paintings construct a dreamlike and poetic visual language, combining the luminosity of Western Impressionism, the lyrical foundation of Eastern aesthetics, and the ethereality of contemporary visual art.
Her approach centres on ‘water’ as a visual methodology, fusing Impressionist techniques of light and colour with the spirit of Eastern expressive painting. She focuses on the impermanence of Jiangnan’s water surfaces—ripples from raindrops, gliding waterfowl, and elusive reflections—using staccato brushstrokes and a palette of emerald, teal and ash grey to construct a visual realm that is hazy and airy.
Her artistic language naturally integrates the tranquil poetic quality of Song Dynasty painting into the tradition of outer light, elevating her works beyond mere records of physical moments to become immersive philosophical meditations.
